Benson is farm country first. The town has a compact, walkable center around the Singing Grove and a long agricultural history behind it, and the fencing that gets asked for here reflects that split. Inside town we build a fair amount of wood privacy fence and chain link for back yards. Outside town the jobs are bigger: pasture, property boundaries along a road frontage, an enclosure around a shop or an equipment yard, and gates wide enough that a tractor and a trailer can get through without a three-point turn.

Field fence and woven wire are the workhorses on the agricultural side. We size the wire and the height to the animal, because what stops a cow does nothing to stop a goat, and a horse leaning on a fence puts pressure on it that a light-gauge wire will not survive. Where you want the look of a traditional farm boundary, board fence and split rail do the job, and mesh backing behind the rails keeps animals from pushing through the openings.

The ground south and east of Benson starts to give up some of the heavy Piedmont clay for sandier loam as you move toward the coastal plain, but that does not change our approach to posts. Sandy soil offers less lateral resistance, not more, and a fence line running across an open field takes wind that a fence tucked between two houses never sees. Every post goes in concrete, corners and gate posts get larger footings, and we brace the ends properly so a long wire run stays tight instead of sagging by the second summer.

Gates, access and the things people forget

The single most common regret we hear on rural jobs is a gate that turned out to be too narrow. Measure the widest thing you own, then add room for the turn into the opening. We build double-drive gates for equipment access, hang them on heavy hardware rated for the weight, and set the gate posts deeper than the line posts because a gate is a lever working against its post every time it swings.
