Hurdle Mills is spread out. Properties here are counted in acres rather than lot lines, houses sit at the end of long drives, and the road frontage often runs farther than the whole perimeter of a suburban yard. That changes what a fence is for. Out here it is usually marking a boundary, framing an entrance, containing animals or securing equipment, not screening a neighbor forty feet away.

Frontage is where most Hurdle Mills projects start. A three-rail or split rail run along the road with a proper gated entrance defines the property and looks intentional without walling anything off, and it costs a fraction of enclosing the full parcel. We build the terminal ends so the line can be extended later if you decide to keep going, which is what most people end up doing.

Long runs are their own discipline. Consistent post spacing, string lines that account for the roll of the ground, and extra posts where the grade breaks are what keep a quarter mile of fence from looking wavy from the road. Western Person County clay has rock through it, so the digging is slower than it is closer to Raleigh, and we plan the day around that rather than rushing depth. Every post is set in concrete, which is what stops clay from heaving it loose through a freeze and thaw cycle.

Closer to the Orange County line the parcels get more wooded, and access starts to matter as much as material. We would rather see the property before quoting, because whether a truck can get down the fence line is often the single biggest factor in how a job is priced and scheduled. Chain link still has a place here for kennels, well houses and equipment yards, and black vinyl-coated chain link blends into a treeline far better than bare galvanized.
