The builder graded our lot. Does that affect the fence?

It can. New grading leaves fill dirt that has not fully settled, and a post set in loose fill does not hold the way one set in undisturbed ground does. We dig deeper in those areas and set in concrete to compensate. We also look at where the drainage swale runs between houses, because a fence that blocks it turns into your problem after the first hard rain.

How do we confirm where our property line actually is?

Start with the iron pins at the lot corners. On a Knightdale lot built in the last twenty years they are usually still there and findable. If they are missing or the neighbor disagrees about the line, get a survey. Rebuilding a fence six inches over is far more expensive than confirming the line first.

Is chain link a reasonable option out here?
